How Did I Miss This? There Is a Super Mario Bros Anime?!? + Review of It!
Welcome to another How Did I Miss this! This time, we are going to be covering a hidden Super Mario Anime that was only released in Japan, and you can watch it above with a fan translation! Its called (in English!) Super Mario Brothers: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!
And its only an hour long so I'd highly recommend checking it out!
But I also have a review of it for you! But before we get into that, please like, share and subscribe to NintendosView if you like this article. Now lets 'a go!
Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach Review
Yes, Luigi is green in it! |
Now, this is my first movie review so I'm going to break it into a few sections, plot, characters, animation, music and sound effects, action/adventure, voice acting and ending. I'm also going to be comparing it to the games a lot so, you have been warned. Now lets just dive straight into the story, shall we?
Story *Minor Spoilers*
The story is vary similar, and vary different from the original game. Mario lives (I assume on earth!) an ordinary life, has a normal job and everything is normal. Then, while Mario is playing on his Nintendo, Peach jumps out of the TV and begs Mario to save her! Mario, who has quite a crush on the princess, is willing to help her out!
Bowser (referred to as Koopa!) comes out of the TV and snatches the princess and brings her back into the TV! Mario wants to save her, but he doesn't know how! When Mario tells Luigi about this, Luigi laughs in Mario's face! Then everything goes back to normal (except Mario is much more gloomy.)
Then, when following a strange dog (I skipped a bit!) Mario and Luigi go down a pipe and make it to the mushroom kingdom and start on an epic quest to find the Triforce, (You read that right! Except this time its a super mushroom, a fire flower and a star!) the only thing that can help Mario beat Bowser and save Peach. And Luigi's sticking around because there are gold coins everywhere!
It also ties into the plot of both the original Super Mario Bros and much later Super Mario Odyssey with Bowser turning Toads into bricks and coins and Bowser wanting to merry peach.
It has a lot more depth than the games with everyone talking, Mario being determined to save Peach and going on an epic quest, not as a hero, but as a simple plumber. (I think!)
Characters
The characters are pretty different from the games (since there was only the original) so I'll just quickly cover them.
Mario: An every day plumber who is determined at all costs to save peach and grows into a hero in doing so. Whenever he is about to give up, he thinks of the princess and keeps pushing on!
Luigi: Luigi is vastly different from the games. Throughout most of the movie Luigi is constantly mining and hunting for gold as they go, often being oblivious to everything else. (and saving Mario without even knowing it.)
Dog: I forgot the dog's name but he's helping Mario and Luigi out on there journey, often barking when trouble is coming or there doing something foolish.
Goombas: They are much more clever then in the game and try to trick, catch and by the end even kill Mario to make sure he doesn't make it to the princess.
Peach: Mostly the same but she talks more and tries to trick Bowser into letting her escape and buying more time.
Toads and Toadette: The toads look much more like how they would look in some high fantasy RPG. They thank Mario and help him on his quest.
Old man/Wizard (maybe Peach's Dad?) I'm going to be honest, I have no idea who this guy is. All I know is that he tells them about the mushroom kingdom (also known as treasure land!), Bowser, the bricks and coins predicament and the Tri-Force.
Animation
The animation kind of resembles the Super Mario Bros Super Show animation but has much more charm and expressions to it. And I just really like it. Except for the fact that Luigi is blue and yellow! His color probably wasn't set yet so they just went with there own colors?
Action and Adventure
The adventure pretty much is Mario trying to find the three items of the Tri-Force before Bowser marries Peach. They go across mountains, plains and even the sky to reach her. They also face many foes along the journey, new and old. Its cool to see these enemy's changed to fit the movie as well.
for example, the goombas are much smarter here and are constantly trying to get ride of Mario. And Mario never jumps on them!
Its a lot of fun to see Mario and Luigi fighting, walking and even sitting around a campfire! Now too much more I can say! Its got some awesome and hilarious action scenes and its amazing to watch Mario and Luigi go on an adventure!
Music and Sound Effects
I'll start with the music. The music is both old and new. The main theme is an 80's light rock song about being "Super!" and "Rock n' Roll!" and the theme that plays whenever Mario is thinking/daydreaming of peach is much more romantic, but still sounds like it came from the 80s.
And whenever Mario and Luigi are walking or fighting with the main theme I really enjoyed!
And then there is quite a few Mario songs in here as well, like the main theme, water, and castle, and it made me feel really excited and nostalgic!
And that brings us into the sound effects which, more often then not, are taken straight from the game, from Mario's jumps to the sound of getting coins and it had the same effect as the music.
Now I may have loved this part so much because I'm a big Mario fan but still.
Voice Acting
We are SUPER! |
Now, the voice acting, in my opinion was a mixed bag. I thought Peach's voice was less annoying than in the game, but its really weird to hear Luigi, Goombas and even Bowser this high pitched! However, I would still recommend watching it in its original glory than with a fan dub.
Ending **Spoilers!!!**
I highly recommend watching it first before reading this section. Now, here comes the climax!
Mario had given up, but then Luigi helped him to get back on his feet, they sailed to Bowsers castle, battled the crazy goombas and finally made it through pure determination! (for Peach or for gold, depending on the brother!) And Mario's main flaw in this movie is fear. Mario was so scared that he forgot about the Tri-Force but by the time he remembered, he was battling Bowser. He eats the Mushroom and the flower, but Bowser kicks the star out of his hand into the crack. All hope was lost. Peach begged for Bowser to spare Mario but he would not. Then, when all hope was lost, Luigi comes back, and had found the star while digging for gold. Then Mario faces Bowser! He throws punches, kicks and finally throws Bowser Super Mario 64 style and they won!
So yeah, the climax was pretty awesome, its just what came next that stunk even more than Super Mario Odyssey's ending! The dog turned out to be a Prince and was Peach's love. Mario is heartbroken and all Mario gets is a kiss on the nose and goes back home. The End!
While almost all of the movie was awesome, that part just STUNK! It was probably suppose to be funny or bittersweet, but to me it was just bitter. The credits were nice though!
Conclusion
Super Mario Brothers: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach, while not perfect, is an amazing movie, especially for a Mario fan such as myself! Its vary different from the Mario games, it actually has a plot! *Gasp!* It is funny, has great animation, fun characters, a decent story, great action that inspired Super Mario 64, amazing music, okay voice acting and a great climax! (even though the ending left a bad taste in my mouth!)
In sort, its the best Mario Movie I've ever seen!
9/10
