Why Luigi's Mansion is One Of The Best Games Ever
Luigi's Mansion is one of my favorite games of all time. Its funny, spooky and addicting. But after my review, I started thinking. Why is it just so good? I wanted to look at it in a new perspective. And that's what we're going to be doing today. Join us, as we tear the mansion apart and see what its hiding.
Exploration and Discovery
One amazing thing is that the game constantly wants you to explore and discover the mansion. Each time you get a key, you want to know what's behind that room that you passed by. For example, in the first area, the twins room is locked which makes you wonder what's behind that door. And its vary exciting when you finally get to! The boos also encourage exploration by making you both go back to previous areas, and when they escape into a room you haven't unlocked yet, makes you want to open that room even more!
You want to find every secret (there are plenty, like watering a plant after every area!), and explore every inch of the mansion. It also encourages you to try new things, like I wonder what would happen if I spray this sleeping ghost with water!
The Character of the Mansion (Atmosphere)
The Mansion in this game itself is a character and has so much detail put into it. Each room is brimming with traps, ghosts and puzzles. And the atmosphere is amazing! When you first enter a room, its always dark and no threat is in sight. There is no music. It makes you wonder what new thing is in this room.
The music in this game also really helps! Even in light rooms, Luigi's still whistling the main theme and there's still lightning, so even though you feel safe and secure, it still has a spooky feel to it. There are just so many layers to the music alone! There's Luigi whistling or humming to it, sometimes the ghosts joining in, the music in the halls harmonizing, and even sounds coming from some rooms (to make you curious!) Its truly amazing!
Ghosts
Sucking up ghosts is honestly most of the fun! (and frankly, half the time your sucking up ghosts!) There are a few different types. First off is the normal ghosts, which are build on timing (or later using an element to take 'em out!) you have to hit your flashlight on them at the right time so there stunned, then quickly suck them up. These ghosts are fairly easy when you figure them out if there's only one or two of them. But if you're in a swarm, things can get ugly so its best to keep your distance on these guys.
One thing to note is, half the time ghosts appear, Luigi jumps with fright, making you drop whatever your doing for a second. It makes swarms even more dangerous, and makes it much harder to run from baddies.
Then there are animal ghosts, like ghost mice or bats. For the most part, there just obstacles to avoid and also add a little to the spooky atmosphere.
Next are the Boos, which are to encourage exploration and visiting past rooms. They also make saving less tedious.
Then there are the Portrait or Mini-Boss ghosts. There are 23 of these (5 are optional!) Much more mini-bosses then your average Mario game! These ghosts are harder to take out as well, there a puzzle. Each one has a different way to beat them as well! For example, the first portrait ghosts you come across, Neville, you have to wait till he yawn and then suck him up. The second one, you notice that she cares about her hair, and the winds blowing. So you try pulling back the cirtain and Bam! You can catch her now!
You find that if you look at most portrait ghosts, they disappear, which means you both have to figure out how to beat them, and time it right! It also, once again, encourages you to try new things and figure out how to beat them.
And, finally, is the boss ghosts. These guys take you into there arena and you have to battle it out! These guys are a puzzle as well, but there much more dangerous than portrait ghosts. There are four of these and each one tests a different skill you learned or two.
For example, the first boss, Chauncey, before you even face the baby you must first wake him up and shoot a ball in his face! First you must dodge the giant rocking horses, which tests your dodging skills. (the animal ghosts, hazards and ghosts taught you this.) Then, you must dodge the giant bouncing balls (its much easier when you have to pattern memorized!) Then a ball stops bouncing and you must suck it up, shoot it in his face, and suck him up. (portrait ghosts taught you this!) and then, the boss throws a tantrum which actually teaches you how to avoid a different boss in the future!
Money and Ending
And finaly, after you beat the game, you get ranked by how much money you get. If you get an A, you get a grand mansion, but if you get an H, then you get a tent. This encourages you to find more money, by both doing better and finding MORE secrets. Or you could want to live in a tent and try to collect as little money as possible, so it encourages you to play again and experiment!
And there you have it! What do you think? Was Luigi's Mansion masterfully made? Let us know in the comments below. Also, don't forget to like, share and subscribe to NintendosView.
