Is Devil World Any Fun In 2019?
Devil World is a Japanese and European exclusive game made by Nintendo in 1984, however, since it never came to America (and I wasn't around in the 80's!) I never got to play this one... until now! Get ready, because we're diving in! Let's seewhat a millennial (me!) thinks about this game!
Story
The story is simple. A green creature named Tamagon (who is surely the inspiration for Yoshi!) decides to "Attack the Devil's World!" Well, this is an nes game and an early one at that, and it really doesn't need more story than that.
Music and Feel
The music is surprisingly catchy and upbeat, giving this game a vary unique feel. I could have sworn when you start is up it was playing the nutcracker!
It feel cute and colorful thanks to the Devil's non menacing minions and cute (in the game, not in the art!) main character. But, at the same time it feels kinda dark because, you know, the Devil is hovering right above me!
In the end, the music is okay but I do love the feel of the game.

Graphics
While the graphics are dated, I feel there's a certain charm it them that adds to the feel of the game. I love all of Tamagon's facial expressions and him wobbling along. I also like how they chose the devil's minions to look. I even like how the Devil himself looks. (never thought I'd use that sentence!) I can't help but notice he looks more like a Japanese demon which, I like those better anyway!
So, in the end, I like the graphics and it really adds to the feel of the game.
Gameplay
The Gameplay takes some heavy inspiration from Pac-man but also throws a lot of original ideas into the mix. So, the goal of level one is to collect all the pellets and avoid the Devil's forces. However, you can only pick up pellets when holding a cross, which are scattered across the level and can only be held for a limited time. When holding a cross, you can also shoot fire at enemies and then eat them. I think this is a vary fun twist on the Pac-man formula and is a lot of fun.
But the Devil has one more trick up his sleeve. Up above, he commands some of his minions to move the camera in a certain direction. The issue is, you can be crushed by the camera, so you need to stay alert on where the camera might head next.
Then level 2 hits and there are no pellets and no crosses. This time, you need to collect four Bibles, and put them into a seal. But the issue is, the four bibles are in the corners and move with the screen, making getting to them both fun and difficult. The Bibles give Tamagon the same powers as with the Crosses.
Once you beat level 2, you get to go to a bonus level and after that, the cycle continues, but gets more difficult and introduces new enemies along the way.
Conclusion
The story got the job done, and while the music wasn't all that good, the feel of the game I really enjoyed. As for the graphics, it's simple but effective. And finally, I enjoyed the gameplay! It was a nice twist on the Pac-man formula and I picked this game up in 2019!
I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed it and I honestly feel like this is a hidden gem!
It may be one of my favorite NES games that I've played! (keep in mind I haven't gotten to play that many!)
