Dragon Quest: Your Story movie review - faithful to the charms of ...

While most people were racing to see the brand new Sonic the Hedghog movie, I on the other hand, decided to check out Dragon Quest: Your Story, which is a movie you can watch right now on Netflix and actually got released in theaters in Japan. Sorry, getting off topic a little bit, but let's get into the review shall we?

Okay, right up front the movie starts off a little different then many other movies. It actually starts by showing the gameplay of Dragon Quest 5, which is the game that the movie is based on. And I think that's a really cool way to start us off and give us the contexts of the film. Then we hit what we will see the rest of the film and I'm just going to say it, the animation is gorgeous. I absolutely loved how it looked and it honestly looks just as good as what Dreamworks and Disney make. Everything looks so good!

Dragon Quest: Your Story' Movie Review: Technically Impressive But ... Now, let's talk about the music and voice acting. So, the music was pretty solid, it was vary satisfying to hear the Dragon Quest theme as  Luca runs around on his adventure. Other than that, it gets the job done, but isn't super memorable or anything. Now, I watched the movie in Japanese but I also watched a bit of it in English as well. The Japanese voice actors I thought did a good job for the most part, but the main cast had some pretty solid voices. The English voices were pretty good, I thought the English  Luca did a really good job, possibly better then his Japanese counterpart, but I found many of the other characters not as good, but still well acted. But I'd really like to hear which one you guys preferred in the comments.

Is 'Dragon Quest Your Story' available to watch on Netflix in ... Now, as for the plot, it follows the plot of the game vary closely...until the end.
But I found the beginning to be a bit confusing since it jumps around a lot. One minute he's training and playing with his dad, and the next his Father is dead and he's been a slave for ten years! My other complaint was that in the middle of the film it slowed down to a startling stop. That's where he's trying to decide who he is going to marry. This is one of the times where they may have sticked a little too closely to the game in my opinion. You see, in the game you could choose which girl to marry, so they worked that in there, which I thought they defidently could've done better.  The rest of the plot I found was pretty solid and I thought the character development to be vary good as well. Yeah, it has a couple of pacing issues but overall, it was a good plot. I also really liked the characters, despite some of them being fairly flat.
Dragon Quest: Your Story Movie Review – RPGamer
The action in this movie is defiantly one of the highlights. Weather it's showing (his name) venturing forth, battling monsters, or that fantastic finally, this movie is filled with fantastic and well paced action. I love how the camera moves, and all the cool effects really make the action feel amazing.

The other big highlight for me was the humor and fan service. Now there are mainly two types of humor in this movie. The humor that references the games, like enemies dropping a bunch of coins, and humor that everyone will get. I found both to be pretty hilarious throughout, with only a few not landing.
And the humor brings me to the fan service. And let me just say, this whole movie IS fan service. Every frame of the movie, including the controversial ending is a love letter to the fans. It doesn't mean that if your not a fan you wont enjoy it, but you will probably enjoy it more if you know at least a little bit about the games. I loved all the little nods to the game like character combos, enemies dissapearing in smoke and much more. This movie really feels like the games, which is so cool!

Dragon Quest: Your Story' Movie Review: Technically Impressive But ...

9/10

Alright, so at the end of the day, Dragon Quest: Your story is a really good movie. It has gorgeous animations, thrilling and engaging action, and a solid plot that is filled to the brim with love and care for the series. While not perfect, I highly recommend you check this one out, especially if you are a Dragon Quest fan. To me, this is by far the best video game movie I've ever seen! You may be wondering why I haven't talked about the ending in this review, that's because I am making a whole video dedicated to the ending, so be sure to check that out when it comes out. Thanks for watching.
