Sonic and the Black Knight Review
Sonic and the Black Knight Review
Imagine for a second, me in Wallmart or something, checking out some Wii games for my birthday and then all of a sudden, I see Sonic and the Black Knight, I had never played a Sonic game before some I'm like "Why not?" and got it. The question is, did I enjoy it? Or can it go with sonic forces?
Story
Alright, so as soon as I put it in, I was greeted with this, and I was sold. It looked quite cool and good. But sadly there is only one other cutseane besides this one like this, with the rest being boring storybook cutseanes to tell you the story, and I confess I skipped most of them! But the story goes a little like this, Merlina was under attack by the evil King Arthur and she summons a hero so, of course, its Sonic. He gets a sword, and you have to take him down. The shocking thing about this game, though is halfway through, when you think its done, a big plot twist happens and your up agents something bigger! So, I would say the story is good.
Controls
Aright, so the controls are pretty simple. You can walk and you slowly run faster, you can move left and right, block, swing the Wii remote to swing your sword, and you can do a charged attack. And that's it. Pretty straight forward, however after a while my arm was getting tired of all that swinging!
Gameplay
Alright, so the goal of most stages is to get from point A to point B. And sometimes there are special missions like kill a certain number of enemies in a time limit or something like that. Now the levels themselves are pretty well designed and they switch things up, like riding on a chart while hitting baddies as they try to get you. Sadly, the game only barley lets you move left and right and it drove me crazy for a while. I hate invisible wall! But once you get use to it its pretty good. The levels though really start to feel repetitive after a while, like all you have to do most of the time is run and swing. Some things, like the charged attack make it more interesting but I did get bored after a while. Also, while pretty good, the bosses all felt pretty much the same as well, just wait for the right moment, dodge or block, and than hit, hit, hit! So in the end, the gameplay is okay, nothing special.
Music and Voice Acting
If you like rock while fighting knights, this music is for you! While most of the songs were pretty good, I've never liked rock songs that much and I espshually never liked songs with singing in my games, which there is a fair amount in here. Sometimes while being stuck on a boss I was like "AHHHHHHHHH! Stop playing that song over and over!" the only rock song I liked was Knight of the Wind in the credits. Even the final bosses music wasn't vary good! And as for the voice acting, it was okay, some people were better than others but I don't remember anything cringy.
Graphics
As for the graphics, it was good for a Wii game, especially the opening cutsceane. I did like how the game itself looked too. With crisp, kind of dark graphics for a sonic game. The evil knight looked cool and the backgrounds looked good. Even the storybook scenes look pretty.
Replay Value
There is some replay value here! The main story is 2 to four hours and the extras will take you about 7 more, so pretty short so its easier to come back to. Plus there are high scores to try, bonus levels and things to collect. Plus there is an unlockable battle mode! Where you can face other players, unlock new stages and characters, and get new modes. While fun for a while, the battle mode quickly becomes stale.
Conclusion
So Sonic and the Black Knight was an okay adventure. It had rock music, memorable story, good graphics and a decent gameplay, but forgettable. With speed and plowing through enemies. It also had, a decent battle mode, okay bosses, limited, repetitive levels. Sadly, it didn't live up to me expectations, but all in all, it was a decent game.
6/10
