Super Mario Bros. Review

Super Mario Bros. Review
Its been a long time since the original Super Mario bros was released in 1985. A lot has changed. Now, how good was that game and how well does it hold up? Is it even worth picking up if you've never played it? That's what I'm going to try to answer today! But before we start, consider subscribing to NintenosView so you never miss an article. Now lets get to the review!

Story
I must say, the story is a bit different this round! One day, the Mushroom Kingdom was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles capable of using powerful dark magic. Their magic was used to transform all the Mushroom People into inanimate objects such as rocks, bricks, and even horsetail plants, thus spelling the kingdom's downfall. Only the daughter of the Mushroom King, Princess Toadstool, can undo the spell and restore her people back to life, but she is being held captive by King Koopa himself. Mario hears of the princess's plight, and sets out on a quest to topple the Turtle Tribe and save the once-peaceful kingdom.
So Pretty cool that there was originally a lot more going on than "oh no! The princess has been kidnapped!"

Controls
So this is the one where a lot of older games show  there age. And with this one I'd say it did and didn't age well. The gravity just takes some getting use to, but the actual controls are just as good as they were back in  the day. Move left and right, A to jump,  hold B to run and press B to shoot fireballs and up to climb vines. Pretty straightforward and that part has aged well.

Gameplay
We all know how it works. You go through the castle, jump on the flagpole and head to the next level. Than, once you make it to the fourth, you face Bowser and than head to the next world.
You can  choose to play with one person or two and you both take turns doing levels and compete for a higher score. The cool part is the entire game has arcade like scores to it. Now as for the levels, they hold up surprisingly well. But they are quite hard at times.
Power-ups make there first appearance in this game and there are the following,
Mushrooms: Make you grow big.
Fire Flower: let you shoot fireballs
Starman: Makes you invincible for  a limited time.
1-up shroom: Gives you another life.
Alright so why is this game difficult?  Why if you get hit by an enemy while being fire Mario, instead of turning into Normal Mario like you would in modern Mario games, you turn into small Mario.  Than  there is the fact that whenever you run out of lives you start over the world. Not the level.  Lives are vary important in  this game. Lots of times I was super close to Bowser, only to die and start over the INTIRE world! And it is frustrating! But if you're persistent, you can have a great time!
Also  the Bowser fights are hard, World 3 and on. They often are over fairly quickly, but they are chalanging. First Bowser starts off with fire, than later he throws hammers and by World 8 he throws like 100 of them! So  you eather have to time it just right or blast him with a fire flower! (good luck  holding one for more than a level  or two!)
Another thing I must note is this is pure, simpiler Mario, and I love Mario  games and it was fun to go back to a game with like 15 baddies and only three power-ups and going back to the basics. I would say the game is just as fun and addicting as it use to be, you might have to have a bit of patience though! What more can I say? This is the game that put Mario on the map and saved video games!

Music
I'm just going to come out and say it, this game has one of the most iconic and greatest songs of all time! Ever wonder what game the Super Mario  theme came from? Well, this is it!

Graphics
Now,  games don't have to  look  realistic to have good graphics.  And I like the graphics in this game. Again I love how this game goes back to the basics. However, some of it hasn't aged well such  as the sprite for princess toadstool (Peach!)  and the axe to cut the bridge above.  If you don't mind simpiler graphics and it doesn't hurt your eyes than you'll be fine. Otherwise you can just get Super Mario all stars.

Replay Value
See the source image
Thank you Mario! Your quest is over. We present you a new quest. Push button B to select a wordl         -Peach
There is a shocking amount of replay value. You can compete with yourself or a friend to get farther than before without dying or compete for a higher score. Did you know that most NES games have a hard mode (I wish all modern games had that!)? Well, Super Mario Bros has it. It makes the platforms smaller, most Power-ups are gone, enemy's are replaced by harder ones! (ex: goombas are replaced with turtles and turtles are replaced with fireproof turtles!) Enemies also move a lot faster. Good luck!

Conclusion
8/10
While far from perfect, Super Mario bros is a great game and everyone should play it at least once! Please note that this is my opinion and I believe this game reminds us that no matter old Mario may be, he is still one of the greatest franchises of all time.

Do you agree? Let us know in the comments. Also let us know what else I should review.
THE END.
